Selfie

Synopsis

This conceptual and sensory miniature rethinks the concept of the social (self) portrait by playing with the distortions of a Big Brother impassively watching over us. A technological state of permanent control, of mechanization of a daily life ruled by a human-made inventiveness that has ended up taking control of our lives.

Director’s Notes

The short Selfie, which I conceived as a sensorial, atmospheric fantasy more than a logical and rational narrative, was suggested by a state of unease and disquiet caused by our movements in big cities. Without even realising it, we move from one place to another conditioned by hundreds of machines we listen to unconsciously, that tell us how we should behave and the risks we run if we do not follow instructions. While these “others” constantly echo, we take selfies that produce images in which we pose as if we were in an advertisement; a world of violent contrasts that range from the “culture of fear” to a strange egotistical relationship. But, in fact, what are we looking at and who is looking at us? Where are we looking to and from where are we being watched?

Similarly to my other works, when contemplating and recording the space portrayed in Selfie, I have many different influences in mind to help me rethink our historical moment, ranging from the robotic voices in Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World to Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, and, above all, Michel Foucault’s panopticon and his theories on dystopias; these imaginary depictions of a future society with undesirable characteristics which, nonetheless, whispers to us from afar that it is already here.
